On Friday, 17 August, the grade 7 learners from Red River and Reddam House/Atlantic Seaboard met in Manenberg to read to the grade R classes and share ideas. It was a wonderful morning and we hope to repeat it soon. Friendships were formed and much laughter was shared by all. A big thanks to Reddam for the donation of so many wonderful books to the new library at Red River and for their support.
A huge thanks to the Book Lounge, author Sally Partridge, and Trend Talk for bringing books to the girls of Red River School.
What an amazing Friday!
Rock Girl and Grand Daddy Hotel took to the streets tonight with our full moon bike ride to create awareness about safe spaces for girls and women. A big thanks to the cyclists – together we raised R6200 to continue creating beautiful safe spaces!
The full moon on Monday, 4 June 2012 will herald another one-of-a-kind, 10km Full Moon Bike Ride, sponsored and hosted by The Grand Daddy Hotel in Long Street, Cape Town. This is in support of The Rock Girl Safe Spaces initiative which is a grassroots public art and education campaign to raise awareness about the need for safe spaces in our cities and surrounding communities.
Rock Girl is partnering with artists and designers to create public benches that will serve as symbolic safe spaces.
Registration is from 17h30 and the cycle starts at the hotel at 18h30. There is no need to book unless a hired bike is required. The ride is open to the public and accommodates cyclists of all ages and capabilities. The cost is R50 and includes the cycle ride, iced tea, snacks at The Grand Daddy and entertainment from Nomadic Orchestra. Derek van Dam, well-known TV presenter, is the master of ceremonies.
An auction of Paul du Toit’s artwork, a two-night stay at Grand Daddy Hotel & Old Mac Daddy as well as other valuable items will follow at 7.30pm.
Join Rock Girl and Cape Town Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille this Thursday, 4 August at 5pm as we unveil more Safe Spaces benches, create a human chain across the pedestrian bridge, and auction off soccer balls decorated by talented South African artists like Conrad Botes, Lauren Beukes, and Zapiro to raise money to create more safe spaces for girls and women.
Girls from Red River Primary School and Grassroots Soccer Skilz Street will be on hand to help the Mayor unveil the benches – come congratulate them on their efforts to help make Cape Town safer for all.
